Around twenty ‘friends of Queens Market’ turned up at St Modwen Properties plc agm in the city to leaflet their shareholders about their plans to buy Queens market and pull it down prior to redevelopment of the area.

Three ‘ friends’ had brought shares in Mowden so they could attend the agm and address the shareholders. Councillor Alan Craig told them how important the market is to Newhams multi-ethnic comunity. “The market is unique”, he said and urged St Mowdens to pull out. “It’s not an important project to them – it’s not even mentioned in your report!”

Sir Anthony Glossop. the Chairman of Mowden, invited the ‘friends’ to discuss the future of the market with him.

The Bargain Bragger Briton Generation is Here (Consumer)

    • Over 24 million Britons describe themselves as bargain shoppers
    • ?Bargain Bragger Britons? know their finances inside out, down to the exact pound
    • Wales and Scotland are Britain?s bargain hunting champions

?Our research shows the kudos of wearing designer labels is a thing of the past. Bargain hunting has turned into the nation?s favourite hobby and more and more people are proud to shop for the best deal and flaunt it.”

The trend for flaunting the latest labels and expensive brands is now a distant memory, with the latest research from Unbiased.co.uk revealing that the UK is now a nation of proud ?Bargain Braggers?. Unbiased.co.uk‘s Get Saving!* research reveals that half of all Britons (24.3 million) classify themselves as ?Bargain Spenders?, shunning expensive items in favour of cheaper ones and they are more than happy to shout about their bargain from the rooftops. And with Primark?s flagship store causing scrums on London?s Oxford Street, it looks like the ?Bargain Bragger Briton? is here to stay.

The good news is that the ?Bargain Bragger Briton? keeps a close eye on his finances. Two thirds of our bargain proud shoppers (66%) know their bank account balance down to the nearest ?10, compared to a national average of only 58 per cent. Bargain shoppers also have a better awareness of their current debt levels, with 63 per cent being able to specify the amount they owe down to the nearest ?10 (national average: 58%).

But it seems the Bargain Bragger Briton phenomenon has swept the nation at a different pace. Wales and Scotland are battling for the title of ?bargain hunter hotspots?, with a whopping 55 per cent of the respective population classifying themselves as ?Bargain Spenders? (national average: 50%). Londoners and people in the South West in contrast have yet to be fully hit by the bargain wave ? with less than half seeing themselves as ?Bargain Spenders? (47% and 46% respectively).

David Elms, Chief Executive of Unbiased.co.uk, commented: ?Our Get Saving! research shows the kudos of wearing designer labels is a thing of the past. Bargain hunting has turned into the nation?s favourite hobby and more and more people are proud to shop for the best deal and flaunt it. It does however leave you to wonder what bargain hunters are doing with the money they save by being a bargain hunter ? and while recent research suggests that Britain?s propensity to save has shown some improvement over the last year, much more remains to be done.

NABMA is pleased to announce that April 17th was a historic day for the markets industry because the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Private Markets Operators (APMO) voted unanimously to become part of Nabma.

Nabma?s Chief Executive, Graham Wilson, made a presentation to the AGM before members voted and he explained that APMO members would not be able to take full membership of Nabma but they would exist as a separate group within the Nabma structure.

This decision has followed months of negotiation between the Nabma Management Board and the Executive Committee of APMO and is based on the acceptance by APMO of a number of conditions. It is intended that the arrangement will operate on a trial basis and will be reviewed in twelve months. APMO members will pay subscription rates based on the current Nabma subscription bandings.

This is an exciting development for Nabma and provides a platform for both public and private market operators to work together for their mutual benefit. In recent years the two organisations have come closer together primarily through the work of the Markets Industry Forum and the All Party Parliamentary Group and this latest development is an extension of the partnership working that is already in existence.

The new arrangements are likely to be implemented from 1st May.

NABMA Chief Executive Graham Wilson confirmed that this is a ground breaking partnership. ?By linking public and private sector market interests we indicate to government agencies the joined up thinking that exists within the industry that hopefully will strengthen our voice and ability to influence policy and decision makers?
